Zero-emission car and motorcycle event to be moved to bigger and better venue
ORGANISERS BEHIND the EMXGP zero-emission racing event for cars and motorcycles, due to be launched during the GP-Elec event this June in partnership with the City of Levallois, Paris, is to be rescheduled to mid-October 2010 and relocated to ‘an alternative’ major European city.
The original event was set to feature electric car racing, as well as providing a demonstration platform for zero-emission motorcycle racing. EMXGP say the new venue will create a greater event – organisers are looking at the move as a step forward, rather than a postponement.
The organisation say the change in plans will ‘allow all the participating teams more time to build, as well as allow EMXGP to create a much bigger and more useful event; integrating the launch of EMXGP into a larger programme of zero carbon racing and a carbon conference to examine the wider energy crisis and every day green technology solutions.’
EMXGP claim the revised plan would have’ major benefits for the teams as well as commercial partners, sponsors and the EV industry as a whole.’
The organisation are set to unveil plans for the new event next week.
MotoCzysz to race 2010 TT ZeroMotoCzysz has signed on to race in the 2010 TT Zero on the Isle of Man.
The Portland-based manufacturer competed in the 2009 zero-emissions race on the Isle of Man, and is one of the first to enter the TT Zero after the Isle of Man TT’s split with TTXGP.
“We are very excited to be returning to the Isle of Man to compete in the 2010 TT Zero,” says Michael Czysz, founder of MotoCzysz. “The fact that electric motorcycle racing has been elevated to an official class within the TT shows the commitment of the Isle of Man Government in providing the low emission pioneers with a world stage to demonstrate their solutions. This may end up being one of the purest prototype classes left in racing.”
For 2010, MotoCzysz have updated its E1pc motorcycle with a new electric motor controller system the company says it expects to be the highest torque/density electric motor in the industry. At the TT Zero, MotoCzysz will try to claim the 10,000 pound (US$15,500) bounty for being the first to average 100 mph with a clean emission race bike on the Isle of Man’s mountain course.
Another team is headed for the grid at the TT Zero electric motorcycle race, this one a Nordic outfit led by an experienced road racer modifying a Honda race bike.
The Swedish Electric Racing Team follows MotoCzyzs in committing to the TT Zero, which recently split from the TTXGP to take over the race first held last year on the Isle of Man. The team was founded by Lars “Lasse” Nilsson, a former motocrosser and road racer who also worked as a mechanic spinning wrenches for race teams.
The team has picked up some impressive hardware on which to base its bike, buying a Honda CBR 600RR ridden by Anthony West for the now-defunct Stiggy Racing World Superbike team.
“We bought the Honda CBR 600RR because the frame design is well-suited to convert to an electric system and since the new parts are about the same weight and placement, we expect the handling to be very similar to the original bike,” Nilsson said. “We are really thrilled to be participating in the world’s greatest motorcycle race, although we have a lot of work to do between now and then to get the bike ready.”
All the drama aside, Azhar Hussain and the guys at the TTXGP motorcycle green grand prix have been busy busy busy. They’ve lined up an impressive slate of races and added the storied Road America to the calendar.
It’s hard to believe it’s not even a year after the inaugural TTXGP on the Isle of Man and we’ve got 12 races in four countries on the 2010 calendar and a world championship finale at Albacete, Spain in October. And don’t forget the electric car race slated for Paris in June. Do these guys ever sleep? Hussain tells us some 52 teams have expressed interest in racing, though not all of them might make it to the grid.
Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin is the latest venue. The 4.048-mile course has been hosting races since the 1950s, and will bring electric motorcycle racing to the midwest during the Suzuki Superbike Doubleheader weekend June 4-6.
